Why You Should Splurge on Black Lingerie | Kansas City Boudoir Photographer

Confession time. I have a little bit of an addiction to buying lingerie. Shocker right? It started young. All it took was my first purchase at Victoria’s Secret and I was hooked. Like $250 a month hooked. I didn’t have adult responsibilities yet - man those were the days. Nowadays, I feed that addiction with the Divulged Client Closet. Some things never change. While my lingerie addiction hasn’t stopped - my budget has gotten significantly lower and I have to be more choosey about what I purchase.

Now, I should say, I am a “TREAT YO SELF!” kinda gal [any Parks and Rec fans?] So occasionally I will splurge on something nice from one of the more high end stores I love - like Honey Birdette! When I do splurge on a higher end piece I ALMOST ALWAYS buy black!

Obviously black is a pretty basic staple when it comes to intimate wear so it’s not a surprising choice. Not only is black flattering but it also amps up the sex factor a bit in my opinion. Kind of like a dark and mysterious man. Somethin’ sexy about it.

But the REAL reason I select black is for versatility sake. If I am going to spend a little more on a lingerie set - I want to be able to use it for more than just one “outfit.” Think of this like you do your closet of regular clothes. Generally speaking, we want to be able to mix and match pieces to create a new look vs having only one specific outfit, right? Black is a little easier to mix and match because there aren’t as many color variations that might cause one piece from one set to not match a piece from another. If you bought all red lingerie, for instance, there is a high chance you will have several shade variations of red and not be able to mix match as easily.

I pulled several of my favorite sets from my own personal collection to use as an example for you to see the many ways you can get more use out of the sets you own!

First, I grabbed a basic black bra and panty set and a classic black body suit. These pieces are classic basics that everyone needs in their collection. Then, I added in 4 of my favorite all black sets from Honey Birdette. These sets were more of a splurge, but by selecting all black, I am able to get more use out of each set by mixing and matching with other pieces. I like to have a bit of pattern every now and then - but even then generally try to stick with a black base color. I love this floral lace bra from Victoria’s Secret and the sass from the Leopard print in the Honey Birdette set.

ON A BUDGET? Another great tip to get more use out of your lingerie pieces is to splurge on the accessory piece of a collection - such as the garter belt - vs the whole 3 piece set. A fancier garter belt can easily spice up a basic bra and panty set! Here I have paired a few of my Honey Birdette garter belts with a basic black bra and panty set. This is a great option if you are on a budget but still want to treat yourself to something a little fancier.
