It’s been a minute since I have done a Friday Favorites round up post but I am back on track!
Often, especially around holidays, I have clients that want to incorporate personal props into their session. While generally I prefer to keep things more minimal with the focus on you - sometimes a prop just fits and adds that personal touch to your images.
Before I get into my favorite types of props to incorporate, here are a few general tips when considering something to bring.
General Tips About Bringing Props to Your Boudoir Session
Opt for a more subtle nod to props vs something obvious.
Make sure any props add to the image without taking attention away from you!
Less is more
Make it timeless - are you going to still love them a year from now, 10 years?
My Favorite Props to Include in a Boudoir Session
Food and Beverages - Listen. Your girl loves snacks. I absolutely love getting messy in the studio and incorporating your favorite snack, drink, or baking hobby into your session. Whether we roll in flour on my counter, chill things off with an ice cube, or have a popcorn fight, you are sure to get some spicy images from your session!
BDSM or Kink Items - Just take it from Rhianna - “Sticks and Stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me.” I love a Daredevil that wants to heat things up a little more for their session. Blindfolds, cuffs, gags, whips, or chains - we can make it work! If you are unsure if something is permitted (I see you over there kinkster), do NOT hesitate to just ask. This is a judgement free zone, my friends!
*disclaimer Body fluids outside of saliva are not permitted for health safety reasons. I personally do not photograph genitalia, but I can recommend a few local photographers that do if that is what you are looking for. :)
Flowers - Embrace your delicate, feminine beauty! Flowers can add a soft romantic touch or a punch of color to your session images! I almost always have a bouquet of fresh flowers at the studio - I just love having them around in general. It’s not uncommon for me to pull a few out of the vase and throw in a few poses. In the warmer months, I’ve even ran outside and grabbed some “wild flowers” from the yard.
Nature - Ok. Fine. It’s more of a set than a prop but hear me out. The Divulged Studio is located on numerous acres of private land in Levasy, about 30 minutes East of Kansas City. Let the scenery show your personality. Are you an outdoorsy, nature babe? How about your partner? (We live in the midwest - it’s highly likely) I have used nature many times to inject a personal touch to sessions.
Lumberjack? - Let’s pose on the logs!
Fisher? - I’ve got a creek or we can find a pond, I’m sure!
Hunter? - Let’s head in the woods!
Books or Magazines - Nerdy and Dirty? I see you. Adding your favorite book to your session can add both personality and a lifestyle feel to your final images. Personally, I prefer audio books, but I’m known to use a vintage Playboy in my self Portraits here and there.
Sports Apparel - Admittedly not my favorite, but any Pinterest search will prove this to be a popular option, no doubt. Being from Kansas City, I’m no stranger to the love of sports. I personally just don't care about them enough to want it in my own images. But if sports are a big part of your life, including a favorite sports team can certainly add some personality to your images.
I have had clients bring a variety of sports related items to their session - from jerseys, to t-shirts, custom made panties, hats, and even footballs. If you are going to go the route of using a jersey, though, I recommend a fitted jersey or tshirt vs bringing a classic one from your partner’s closet. Baggy material can often appear more bulky in photos and is less flattering than fitted options that will show off your delicious curves. Another idea to include your favorite team in a more subtle way is by picking lingerie in the teams colors vs having the team name on display.
