Can we talk about the elephant in the room for a second? MONEY is a topic many people tend to shy away from but I think it’s important to talk about. There are many misconceptions about boudoir and sometimes inquiring clients get sticker shock when I send them my pricing. I get it. We see posts all the time of our local photographer offering family sessions for as little as $100. So when I send you my price guide and there are 4 numbers before the decimal - it's shocking. However, I find that usually sticker shock comes from clients not being fully educated on what a boudoir session entails.

Sara Starchild and Christina Meerloo taught a VERY important class in Nashville with The Boudoir Class last fall on photographing BDSM and KINK themes that went beyond just cool poses with bondage props. The workshop covered everything from consent and safety, to the emotional nuances and importance of client prep and post care in BDSM/KINK scenarios. They covered power dynamics and of course cool poses with bondage props as one would expect. I am OBSESSED with the workshop location they selected for this class! We had cages to play in, a furry red room, and a glam bedroom complete with a mirrored vanity that gave us SO MANY different looks!

The first type of client has no idea how they want their boudoir experience to look they just know they are excited [and nervous] to come in and have the experience! The second type of client is just as excited about the creative planning process as they are the experience itself. The last client is somewhere in between. Technically there’s a 4th type of client. This is their 5th time in the studio and at this point we are just mixing sets up to get them something they haven’t done before.

I LOVED THIS LIVE SET ON THE STAIRCASE I DID WITH LISA LAST FALL USING THE WIDOW ROBE FROM THE VAULT CLIENT CLOSET. I HAVE LOST TRACK THE NUMBER OF TIMES I HAVE HAD THE HONOR TO PHOTOGRAPH LISA AT THIS POINT - BUT EVERY TIME WE WORK TOGETHER WE CREATE BEAUTIFUL IMAGES.

IT’S WILD TO ME THAT AFTER ALL OF THESE YEARS WE ARE STILL ABLE TO MIX THINGS UP TO GIVE HER A TOTALLY DIFFERENT LOOK THAN HER PREVIOUS SESSIONS. IT WAS ALSO BONKERS TO ME THAT I HADN’T PHOTOGRAPHED LISA IN ONE OF MY GLORIOUS ROBES BEFORE THIS LIVE PHOTOSHOOT! I AM DYINNNNG OVER HOW STUNNING LISA LOOKS IN RED! I turn off my inner critic by acknowledging it and actively fighting against it. REGULARLY. I’m not perfect and I don’t love every part of myself - and THAT’S OK! When I feel down about one area, I acknowledge the feeling, and then don’t give it another ounce of my mental energy - usually by diversion or distraction. I may not love my boobs, but I do love my eyes, my smile, and my creative mind. So I think about that instead. Seems so simple really. And honestly, over the last 5ish years, it has gotten much easier than it started out. Practice makes perfect right?
